The New Leash on Life program is a collaboration between Animal Haven of Asheville,
Craggy Correctional Center for men, and Dog-Ed, an Asheville-based certified dog
Selected dogs are placed with inmate trainers at Craggy Correctional for 8 to 12
The inmates teach basic obedience, house training, and socialization through
reinforcement and repetition. Dogs are taught to walk on and off the leash and
to basic commands.
We are currently seeking volunteers to assist with Pups on PAWrole, a weekly group outing to
provide the dogs a break from the prison environment, expose them to new places
experiences, and get the word out about the program. Pups on PAWrole outings last 1 to 2
and may involve a leash walk in a park or in town, a visit to a cafe or other
and/or some basic skills training reinforcement. Volunteers do not need to
attend weekly, and days of the week and times vary.
